Photographs, 1920-1960.

Consists of photographs taken to illustrate research experiments by agronomists in the Department from the 1920s to the 1960s. Contains 5,585 35mm color slides (1939-1960); 4,740 5x7 inch black-and-white prints (1920-1960) and their negatives (glass and film); and approximately 215 lantern slides, some of which duplicate selected glass negatives. Slides and photographs accompanied by a card file which gives subject, date, and location for each experiment illustrated; a limited number of lantern slides are also indexed.

The Department of Agronomy and Soils is part of the College of Agriculture. Work in agronomy began at Auburn in the 1880s with the support of 3 of the early directors of the Agricultural Experiment Station, who were agronomists and also served concurrently as professors and administrators in Auburn's agricultural teaching division. In 1914 a Department of Crops and Soils was established and in 1930 the present name was adopted. The Department has operated the Soil Testing Laboratory since 1953. ...
